Summer is here and, right on schedule, the shelter is chockfull of wonderful animals looking for homes. In the month of June alone, we took in 70 cats and kittens, 39 dogs and puppies, three ferrets, six rabbits and two birds. That's 120 animals in a single month! July is proving to be just as busy.

We need your help in finding homes for them all. Our cat population is growing by leaps and bounds with the influx of kittens. So, to help our adult feline friends out, during the rest of July, we'll let you decide the adoption fee for any adult cat adopted during our Name Your Own Price Adoption Promotion. That's right. You tell us how much you'd like to pay. We have dozens and dozens of wonderful adult cats, aged 1 year or olde,r to choose from. We have calicos and torties, tuxedos and tabbies. Long-haired, short-haired, demure ones and feisty ones. A veritable cornucopia of felines, offering something for everyone. Stop by the shelter, choose your new best friend (or let them choose you) and put your own price on love!

We think our pet pick of the week, Calypso, is priceless. She is a lovely and lovable brown and white tabby. This sweet 6-year-old domestic shorthair feline, with the most gorgeous green eyes, certainly enjoys attention. In fact, she often demands it by jumping on your lap and nestling her nose in the crook of your arm. She just wants to love and be loved. She is, indeed, a very sweet, special cat.

Calypso is special in other ways, too. She has a heart condition that is well controlled by daily medication. She knows the drill, though. She is trained on the pill applicator and accepts it as part of her routine, no fuss, no muss —  after dinner and before snuggles. Calypso would be fine living as an inside kitty with other cats, but would do just as well as an only kitty, too. She will be perfect for someone looking for a constant companion. How much would you pay for love?

We also have oodles of kittens at the shelter and in foster care who are ready or almost ready to go home. Stop by the shelter and learn more about who we have and when they are available for adoption.

We are pleased to announce that the second exhibition of art work is now being displayed in our lobby. The current show featuring the brilliant and whimsical work of artist Gil Coyle will be on display until the middle of August.

We encourage all visitors to the Pope Memorial Humane Society to enjoy the current exhibition and future shows in the Art Wall space in the lobby. A portion of the proceeds from any art sold will go toward supporting the shelter. For more information contact us at 594-2200.

Wish list: Cat treats, wet dog and cat food, garbage bags, ziploc bags (quart and gallon) and gift certificates to Walmart, Staples, Amazon and other local businesses. Thanks for your support.
