The National Park Service announced July 7 the apportionment of $1,752,073 for 27 maritime heritage grants across 13 states and the District of Columbia, to include two grants to Maine applicants totaling $92,141. In partnership with the federal Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration, the National Park Service awarded grants for projects that teach about and preserve sites and objects related to the nation’s maritime history.

The grants included $50,000 to the Atlantic Challenge Foundation for its Apprenticeshop Maritime Skills Program. The National Park Service will administer these projects as direct grants to state historic preservation offices, which will disburse funds to applicants.
