The Jean Vedoe Memorial Scholarship awards were awarded for the first time this June at graduation to two Oceanside students. Dori O'Neal of Tenants Harbor and Cassie Butler of Cushing each won $1,000 for their college study. O'Neal will attend Southern Maine Univesity in its social services program, while Butler willl spend four years at Husson University pursuing a nursing degree.

The Vedoe scholarships, issued by the Rockland Congregational Church, are made possible by Doug Vedoe, age 97, in memory of his wife, Jean, who passed away in 2007.

Vedoe' s career was with his father's tool-and-die company, Vedoe-Peterson Co., in Norfolk Downs, Mass. He never graduated from college because of  the Depression, but never stopped learning whatever caught his attention.

Long a supporter of the arts, he made opera, ballet and classical music an importnt part of his life. His business travels took him to much of Europe, and when he retired to Maine, he became a student at the Penobscot School, learning French. He soon became a member of the school's board. Vedoe and his wife were members for 34 years of the Rockland Congregational Church.
