Jean Lawrence, who serves as secretary of the Waldoboro Woman’s Club, was awarded first place in the 2017 Maine General Federation of Women’s Clubs literary competition for poetry. Her poem, entitled “The Waldoboro Woman’s Club: Celebrating 110 Federated Years,” saluted the long history of the club’s involvement in community service, education and support for women’s issues since its inception as a literary club in 1890 through its association with MGFWC from 1907 to the present.

Announced at the June meeting of the WWC was the publication of Lawrence’s article “A Waldoboro Woman” in the 2017 Mid-Coast & Mid-Maine edition of the Memories of Maine magazine. The article gives a biographical description of Maude Clarke Gay (1876-1952), a local woman who led in the activities of her town and state, as well as serving in the International Federated Women’s Clubs organization. The first woman to vote in Waldoboro, Gay later went on to serve as the first woman from Waldoboro in the Legislature; she was also the fifth president of the Waldoboro Woman’s Club.
