The arrival of summer, which officially takes place Wednesday, June 21, was celebrated on Rockland's Main Street Saturday, June 17, with the annual community street party.
Rockland Main Street Inc. sponsored the June 17 annual Summer Solstice Celebration, which closed Main Street to vehicles and opened it up to pedestrians-only for the three hours of the party.
The party featured food, games, live bands, dancing, face-painting and more at a free, family event. During the party, many of the downtown shops hosted sales.
A mainstay of the Summer Solstice Celebration is the Whoopie Pie Eating Competition, hosted by Rockland Cafe. This year's winners are: Peter Beal (adult); Zeb Foster (age 5-10); and Jason Staples (age 11 to 17). Each got another oversized whoopie pie to take home.
An after-hours, adults-only Dock Party, now in its second year, was held at Journey's End Marina and featured games, dancing, food and adult beverages.
