Hildy Ellis will lead a fern identification workshop at Merryspring Nature Center on Friday, June 23, at 10 a.m.

Contrary to popular belief, fern identification is fun and easy. Unlike flowering plants — with leaves, buds, and flowers to remember all at different times of the year — ferns have one set of characteristics present throughout the year. Ellis will demonstrate how to identify ferns using the “Guide to Common Ferns of New England,” which she will provide to all participants. In addition to identification tips, the talk and walking tour will cover fascinating fern natural history, reproduction, and ecology.

The cost of this program is $10, with a discounted rate of $5 for Merryspring members. This is an outdoor program; please wear sturdy shoes and weather-appropriate clothing, and bring a hand lens or magnifying glass. Sign up is necessary for this program. Please register by emailing info@merryspring.org or call 236-2239.

Ellis is district coordinator of Knox-Lincoln Soil Water Conservation District.
