Gardener Denise DeSpirito will lead a presentation called “Bitter Friends”; the first of her summer Backyard Herbalism series at Merryspring on Tuesday, June 13, at noon.

Medicinal herbs can be used in a variety of ways to support one's health. In this talk, DeSpirito will discuss a variety of bitter plants, some as common as the local dandelion, a weed that is really a friend, and how these plants medicinal actions support the body from easing digestion to helping the liver. She will introduce us to some of these plants in the garden and talk about how to grow them and process them for use.

DeSpirito is the gardens manager at Merryspring. Prior to gardening for Merryspring DeSpirito has grown herbs and flowers at Avena Botanicals, Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture in New York, and Farmacy Herbs in Rhode Island.

This is an outdoor program, so guests should dress appropriately for weather and wear sturdy shoes. A selection of recommended gardening books, tools, and plants will be for sale after the presentation.

This lecture is part of the Spring Talk series at Merryspring, sponsored by Camden National Bank. Admission to Tuesday talks is $5, with free admission for members of Merryspring.
