Caneel Cheskin has been awarded the inaugural Ilgenfritz Scholarship to Longfellow Young Writers’ Workshop. Caneel, a rising senior at Belfast Area High School, has received a full scholarship to attend the Longfellow Young Writers’ Workshop at the University of Maine at Farmington in July.

Caneel has been writing since sixth grade and is an aspiring novelist. She specializes in fantasy and science fiction, and has twice placed in her school's writing contest. She hopes to major in English and/or creative writing in college.

The Maine Writers & Publishers Alliance’s second Ilgenfritz Scholarship — to attend the SLICE Literary Writers’ Conference — is open for submissions until July 1. The scholarship supports one female writer who is 18 or older (a high school graduate) who lives in Waldo or Knox counties to attend the 2017 SLICE Literary Writers’ Conference in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Sept. 9 and 10.

The scholarships were founded in honor of writer and editor Elizabeth Ilgenfritz, late of Montville and a longtime member of the MWPA. For information on both scholarships, and to apply for the SLICE one, visit mainewriters.org/ilgenfritz-scholarships.
