Next up at the Art Loft, the downtown nonprofit arts center at 385 Main St., Suite 9 (lobby level of Thorndike building), is an Art Social and a Chinese brush painting workshop.

Kim Nicoll will helm an Art Social focuses on succulents and cactus line drawing Friday, May 19, from 6 to 8 p.m. participants will learn pen and ink drawing skills and add washes using watercolor pencils as they create a variety of drawings to use in personalized greeting cards, home decor and more. Cost is $25.

Nanfei Wang will lead a class in Chinese traditional painting, focused on landscapes, Saturday, May 20, from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Participants will practice using water and the brush to achieve control, learning how to use their minds to “paint” the “emptiness.” In this class, students will learn how to paint rocks, trees, water and figures.

Chinese traditional painting is based on the use of brushes, ink and Chinese painting colors on rice paper. It is mainly divided into figures, flowers, birds and landscapes. Traditional Chinese painting uses subjects to convey artistic ideas and thought. Cost is $35.
