November is Adopt a Senior Pet month and we encourage you to consider adopting one of the dozens of oldies but goodies we have at the shelter. We have more than a dozen senior animals that, for whatever reason, have found themselves at the shelter in their golden years. It's hard enough coming to the shelter when you're young, cute and playful and a quick adoption is likely. Now imagine being a senior pet who has more years behind him than ahead of him, who suddenly finds himself at the shelter wondering what happened.

These mature pets would like nothing more than to have their own home where they can enjoy the peace and quiet of a loving household. To spend their golden years on someone's lap or gazing out a sun-filled window. They may walk a little slower or sleep a little longer, but they certainly don't need less love or love any less. In fact, they may be even more loving and grateful, since they are well aware of what they had and lost and what they gained back through adoption.

Chubs, our pet pick of the week, is an adorable senior male Jack Russell mix. As his name implies, Chubs is packing a few extra pounds. He's currently on a special diet and getting plenty of exercise on his daily walks along our trails with staff and volunteers to get in shape. Chubs is a happy-go-lucky dog who gets along with everyone he meets. We are hoping to find this super-sweet boy a loving home that will help him continue down a healthy path and give him plenty of belly rubs. To learn more about Chubs or the other senior animals in our care, stop by the shelter and speak with a staff member.

Join us Saturday, Nov. 26, at the Elks Lodge in Rockland for the 37th annual Festival of Lights Craft Show benefitting the animals at the shelter. It's one of the biggest local holiday arts and crafts events in the Midcoast. We have dozens of great crafters lined up offering a wide range of handcrafted items for everyone on your gift list. The entrance fee is just $2 (to help us help the animals), but check our ad in the papers for a $1 off coupon. We are also looking for volunteers to help the day of the event and donations of baked items for our bake sale. We hope you'll join us. For more information contact Anna at events@hskcme.org or 691-4930.

Wish list: Canned dog food, canned Cat food, paper towels, large black garbage bags, hand soap, laundry detergent. Gift certificates to Wal-Mart, Staples, Amazon and other local businesses are also a great help. Thanks for your support.
