Stanley Paige Zeigler, D-Montville, defeated former state Rep. Ryan Harmon, R-Palermo, in a hotly contested race for District 96 seat.

Zeigler won the seat by a vote of 2,866 to 2,487, according to unofficial tallies.

House of Representatives District 96 includes the towns of Belmont, Liberty, Lincolnville, Montville, Morrill, Palermo and Searsmont. The seat is being vacated by Rep. Christine Burstein, D-Lincolnville, after her first term.

Zeigler said he would like to see the county grow by developing jobs that don’t threaten quality of life. He entered public service to develop protection of rural life and necessary community services, he said.

Zeigler's top priority is helping the state and county develop renewable energy and promoting the jobs that will go with that energy. He said other issues demanding attention include healthcare, education, the judicial system and the environment.

Harmon said the state of Maine and municipalities, so far, have been unable to control or reduce spending. Most of it is due to not having effective processes to monitor spending, the government operating as usual, and uncontrollable increases to school budgets, he said. Privatization of government agencies, when possible, would help reduce costs, Harmon said.

His top priority, if elected, was to reduce spending.
