Independent Owen Casas has been elected state representative for District 94 in a close race against Democrat Kathleen Meil, both of Rockport, by a vote of 3,065 to 3,016.

Casas will replace term-limited incumbent Joan Welsh, D-Rockport. District 94 covers Camden, Rockport and Islesboro.

Casas emphasized the importance of dealing with the heroin and opioid problem, increasing state government funding of education, and environmental and economic sustainability during his campaign.

He is currently serving a three-year term on the Rockport Select Board and is one of Rockport's two representatives on the Mid-Coast Solid Waste board of directors.

Casas works as a stone mason, as well as assists his wife Marci Annis Casas, with her business, The Study Hall. The couple have three children, ages 6, 4, and 14 months old. Casas served in the Marine Corps after graduating from Medomak Valley High School.
