This week we bid a fond farewell to our little red shelter that could. Now that we are fully functional in our new facility, this week the old building will be torn down. For more than 20 years, it has served the homeless animals in our community well. We saved thousands of lives and created as many families within its walls. We will remember it fondly, as have many on Facebook with posts of pictures of happy pets our community has adopted throughout the years. Thank you to those who had the vision, heart and commitment to get it started and for our wonderful community for supporting us then, now and in the future.

Our pet pick of the week is Syndi. This petite gray-and-white cat was found hiding beneath a car in the parking lot of Wal-Mart back in August. Unfortunately, no one has come to claim this sweet little love bug. Syndi is probably around 2 to 3 years old. She is very affectionate and loves to climb in your lap and settle in for a spell. If you are looking for a friendly feline to share your life with, this little bed warmer is ready to go home.

We are so excited to have won the Over the Rainbow Yarn Community Blanket Knit-athon Food Drive! Thank you to everyone who came and voted by donating food to our box, helping our community feed neighbors in need. We couldn't have done it without you!

Also thank you to the folks at Over the Rainbow Yarn for making their beautiful blanket, which will be raffled off Nov. 26, with all the proceeds going toward the care of animals in need. Raffle tickets are available at their store on School Street in Rockland and at the shelter. The quilt will also be featured and tickets available at our Festival of Lights Craft Show  Nov. 26 at the Elks Club in Rockland. We love our community!

Be sure to keep your pets safe this Halloween by finding a quiet place for your pet away from the door and the stream of trick-or-treaters dressed in strange costumes. Door-darters could escape unnoticed during all the activity. Always a good practice, make sure your pet has a collar with a current I.D. tag. If you need a pet tag, we have a tag-engraving machine at the shelter where you can personalize a pet tag for just $7. It only takes a matter of minutes and could be a ticket home in case they get lost.

It’s also important to keep candy away from pets. Not only could it upset their stomachs, but some, like chocolate, and those that contain the artificial sweetener xylitol, are toxic to pets. Have a safe and Happy Halloween.

Wish list: Canned dog food, canned cat food, paper towels, large black garbage bags, hand soap, laundry detergent. Gift certificates to Wal-Mart, Staples, Amazon and other local businesses are also a great help. Thanks for your support.
