Island Readers & Writers will launch its latest coastal island book tour with Rockport’s Melissa Sweet, author of the new children’s biography “Some Writer! The Story of E.B. White,” Thursday and Friday, Oct. 6 and 7.

“I couldn’t imagine a better place,” said Sweet. “I wanted to do it in Maine. It just seemed to perfect for words. Keep it in Maine and surrounded by water. He (E.B. White) would have loved that.”

Sweet has received Sibert Medals for “Balloons Over Broadway” and “The Right Word: Roget and His Thesaurus” by Jen Bryant; Caldecott Honor Medals for both “A River of Words” and “The Right Word”; and two New York Times Best Illustrated citations.

The festivities on North Haven will kick off Thursday with a dessert potluck at the Waterman’s Community Center, where island residents can meet Sweet and hear her talk about the process of researching, writing and illustrating “Some Writer!” The event, which will begin at 6:15 p.m., also features an exhibit of children’s art based on “Charlotte’s Web”; and adult education students reading from White’s book of essays, “One Man’s Meat.”

On Friday, Sweet will spend the day at North Haven Community School, where she will lead workshops with students in grades 3 through 6 and participate in discussion groups and a Q&A session with seventh and eighth graders. Sweet also will visit North Haven Public Library in the afternoon for a book sale and signing; and join staff from Island Readers & Writers for a tour of Turner Farm.

“Melissa’s book will allow the entire community to learn more about this remarkable writer, as well as delight in her absorbing collage details and authentic primary sources,” said Lisa Shields, Arts/Enrichment Coordinator at North Haven Community School. “Thank you, Island Readers and Writers, for this remarkable opportunity!”

IRW’s Some Writer Tour will continue throughout the fall with additional stops on Vinalhaven (Oct. 21 and 22), Swan’s Island, Great Cranberry Island, Deer Isle-Stonington and Mount Desert Island. By tours end, the nonprofit IRW will have given away 553 copies of “Some Writer! The Story of E.B. White” to school children. For more information, visit
