Daniel Smith has joined The Courier-Gazette as a staff reporter, and will be covering the Knox County courts.


Smith grew up in North Yarmouth and Cumberland, and graduated from Greely High School before moving to Montreal to attend McGill University, where he studied Russian and Hispanic languages and literature and philosophy.


After graduating, Smith worked as a freelance writer and bookstore clerk in Montreal and Hamilton, Ontario, and continued studies in Russian at Middlebury College in Vermont and European University in St. Petersburg, Russia.


Smith has a longstanding interest in writing and literature, and also enjoys backpacking, beer and the company of his cat.


He said he is looking forward to exploring more of Midcoast Maine, where he has visited his family since 2009.
