In the 1960’s the Warren Historical Society received a package of letters written by Edwin Hussy, a Warren sailor. He shipped out of New York on packets in the 1850s and there are about 100 letters in the collection.

Karin Larson of Warren transcribed the letters, researched the vessels on which Hussy worked, and will present a talk to the St. George Historical Society, St. George Grange Hall, Wiley's Corner, Sept. 29 at 7:30 p.m. A potluck supper will be held at 6:30.

In the 1850s it was estimated that three quarters of the men in St. George were away at sea at any given time. The population of the town then was just about what it is now. Thousands of letters must have come into town from men on voyages, but relatively few seem to have survived.

Hussy’s letters should give guests an understanding of a sailor’s life in that period.

Everyone is invited. There is no charge, but donations will be gratefully accepted.
