Our pet picks of the week are Dakota, Nikita and Kibbles. Nikita is a 5-year old Husky mix and her best buddy, Dakota, is a 6-year old male lab mix. This fun-loving duo have been together for quite some time. They love to play and run around together. Throw a ball or two around and they're in heaven. Because they are a bonded pair, we'd love to find them a home together. They are friendly, but big enough and active enough that older children are advisable. They could knock down smaller kids by just friendly bumping. These two lovable lugs are loyal and sweet and will be a wonderful addition to an active family.

It's too bad Nikita doesn't like cats, because our pet pick Kibbles is a dog-loving feline. She would rub up against the dogs in her former home and give kisses and curl up with them but, sadly, not everyone appreciated the affection. If you are looking for a feline friend that loves to get along, then come in and meet Kibbles. At 1 year of age, she has a very playful, loving personality. She is a fabulous family cat looking for the right family. Is that yours?

Helping homeless animals is as easy as taking a walk (or run) at our Whisker Walk Family Fun Day and 5K. Join fellow animal lovers and shelter supporters this Saturday, Sept. 17, at Harbor Park in Rockland to support homeless animals in our community. Walk/Run with or without a dog and end with a whole lot of family fun. We'll have demonstrations, try your luck agility course, vendors, rescues, face-painting, kids' activities, Doggy Day Spa, hot dogs, Bill's famous fries, scrumptious baked goods, live music from Echo Entertainment & Ryan Tyler, and more. Registration starts at 8 a.m., the 5K and walk start at 9 with local TV personality Don Carrigan leading off the walk.

We hope you can make it, but if you can't you can still participate by registering online as a catnapper and support the care of homeless animals from the comfort of your own couch. Thank you to our Best in Show sponsor First National Bank and to all our business community Whisker Walk sponsors. For a complete list of sponsors and to learn more about the event visit hskcme.org.

Join us for Remember Me Thursday, a global awareness campaign to shine a light on pet adoption, Sept. 22, along with the P.A.W.S. Animal Adoption Center and the Loyal Biscuit Co. We will mark the day with a brief candle-lighting ceremony and poetry reading to remember shelter animals worldwide. The event will take place at the old Rockport Elementary School fields at 5:30 p.m. Candles will be provided for the lighting ceremony with a $1 donation by Danica Candleworks. All proceeds will benefit local shelters. Rockland Poet Laureate Joanna Hynd will be reading a poem in honor of the shelter animals.

Wish list: Canned dog food, canned cat food, paper towels, large black garbage bags, hand soap, laundry detergent. Gift certificates to Wal-Mart, Staples, Amazon and other local businesses are also a great help. Thanks for your support.
