According to Knox County Chief Deputy Tim Carroll, Knox County Dispatch received a call Wednesday evening, Sept. 7 from a man who said he was in the Wal-Mart parking lot and was considering suicide.

Sgt. Patrick Polky of the Knox County Sheriff's Office was was close by on Route 1 and took the call. Polky arrived and found a man at the location in Wal-Mart parking lot partially out of his vehicle with the door open.

Polky positioned his cruiser in a manner to be able to see the man. As Polky got out of his cruiser, a shot was fired from within the subject's vehicle. Polky called for assistance not knowing whether the shot was aimed at him or the subject had shot himself.

Once Polky gave commands to the man and determined the scene safe, he immediately started administering medical assistance. The man had shot himself in the chest. EMS was called and transported him to Pen Bay Medical Center. The man, whose name has not been released was last reported in critical but stable condition.
