The Camden Conference is supporting the screening of two documentaries with the Camden International Film Festival in anticipation of the 30th annual Camden Conference: Refugees and Global Migration, Feb. 17 through 19.

“Pescatori di Corpi (Fishing Bodies)” (2016, Switzerland) will be screened Friday, Sept. 16, at 12:30 p.m. at the Camden Opera House and will include a post-film Q&A with director Michele Pennetta, facilitated by Sandra Ruch of the Camden Conference.

The film follows the crew of the Alba Angela, a clandestine fishing boat, as their destinies cross path with Ahmed, a refugee who lives illegally on the boat that, before becoming his home and prison, brought others like him to Sicily. “Pescatori di Corpi,” Pennetta’s debut feature, paints an intimate portrait of indifference in the face of immigration.

“Les Sauters (Those Who Jump)” (2016, Denmark) will be screened Saturday, Sept. 17, at 3:30 p.m. at the Rockport Opera House. In northern Morocco lies the Spanish enclave of Melilla — Europe on African land. On the mountain above live more than a thousand hopeful African migrants, watching the land border, a fence system separating Morocco and Spain. Abou from Mali is one of them — the protagonist in front of the camera, as well as the person behind it. For more than a year, he has ceaselessly persisted in attempting to jump the fence.

Through the lens, Abou gradually finds expression and meaning in his situation. But after 16 months on the mountain, Abou is close to a tragic accident. Returning to Mali is not an option for him and he becomes more determined than ever to pursue his dream of a better life in Europe.

Admission to either screening is $10 or included with the purchase of a CIFF All Access or Festival pass. For more information on the film festival and how to purchase passes, visit pointsnorthinstitute.org/ciff.

This winter’s 30th annual Camden Conference will take place live at the Camden Opera House, streaming to satellite venues: the University of Maine’s Hutchinson Center in Belfast’ Strand Theatre in Rockland; and Lee Auditorium in Portland. The mission of the Camden Conference is to foster informed discourse on world issues. For more information, call 236-1034 or visit camdenconference.org.
