Quilter, lecturer and author Dianne S. Hire will present the program for the next Coastal Quilters meeting, which is set for Saturday, Sept. 10, at 10 a.m. at the Camden Lions Den, Lions Lane off Knowlton Street. The meeting is free and open to everyone. A potluck brunch will follow.

Hire of Northport is a colorist who responds intuitively to the joyful way colors interact as she creates her quilts. While embracing technical skills and strong design concepts, she stretches the boundaries of the “rules” and uses new approaches that allow her bold images to sing.

Part of Hire’s presentation will be about how to create designs that lead to “repeater blocks” which, when interchanged vertically or horizontally, always match other blocks. This is the subject of one of her new books, “App-2-Applique,” which contains several quilts by members of Coastal Quilters who have taken her workshops. Examples of Hire’s quilts and member quilts that are featured in the book will be available for viewing and discussion.

Hire has had her innovatively designed quilts juried into exhibitions all over the United States including AQS in Paducah, Ky., the Dallas Quilt Show, QuiltFest and JAX in Jacksonville, Fla. Her quilts have won many awards, including two Best of Show at the annual “Maine Quilts” show. Hire is the author of several books on quilting, and her work appears in major publications and in corporate collections.

Coastal Quilters, a chapter of the statewide Pine Tree Quilters Guild, meets the second Saturday of the month at the Lions Den. Its purpose is educational and anyone interested in quilting, at any level, is most welcome. Current members represent every type of quilter, from traditional to modern and art quilters.
