Thornton Batty Jr. of South Thomaston will play songs from the Civil War era on his five-string banjo as part of his costumed presentation at Union Historical Society’s meeting in the Old Town House, Town House Road, Sept. 7 at 7:30 p.m.

Batty has been a Civil War reenactor for 20 years and a banjo player for 35. He plays American old-time music in the mountain style using a “claw-hammer” technique of mostly down-picking. Classic and folk banjo uses a technique of up-picking with the fingers and down-picking with the thumb.

His presentation will include information on Civil War soldiers from the Midcoast, Maine’s contribution from the home front and some amusing stories. He takes his presentation to schools and historical societies. Batty’s great-great-grandfather was a soldier in the 20th Maine.
