What can be better than munching on fabulous pizza knowing that your meal benefits Maine’s lobstermen?

That happy situation will take place on Sept. 20, from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Flatbread Company restaurant in Rockport. A percentage of each pizza sold that evening will be donated to the Maine Lobstermen’s Community Alliance. The Alliance is a non-profit organization dedicated to educating the public about Maine’s lobstering heritage and supporting scientific research to further the industry’s stewardship of ocean resources. It is the sister organization of Maine’s oldest fishermen’s organization, the Maine Lobstermen’s Association.

“We are truly grateful for this support from Flatbread Company,” said Alliance Executive Director Patrice McCarron in a news release. “Every dollar raised will help us in our work, such as organizing the next Lobster Leadership Institute for young lobstermen in the state.”

The Lobster Leadership Institute, begun in 2014, takes young men and women in the lobster industry off their boats and into the classroom for specialized workshops on the science, management, and economics of lobstering. The participants also visit lobstermen working on Prince Edward Island to learn about fishing practices across the border.

Flatbread Company, located at 399 Commercial St. in Rockport, specializes in wood-fired pizza using organic and locally-sourced ingredients. On Sept. 20, Flatbread will donate $3.50 for each large pizza and $1.75 for every small pizza sold to the Maine Lobstermen’s Community Alliance. Take-out orders are also available by calling 706-4146.
