United Realty donated $300 Aug. 24 to Pope Memorial Humane Society of Knox County to help the nonprofit animal shelter purchase food and other needed items.

The shelter, located in Thomaston, recently saw an influx of kittens, Volunteer Coordinator Kelly Gould said, and the money will help pay for food, litter and other items. As a nonprofit, Gould said, a majority of the organization's funding comes from donations or in-kind contributions.

Fran Riley, a co-owner of United Realty, said the money given to the animal shelter comes from the business' gross profits. She noted there are 58 real estate agencies in Knox and Waldo counties and she challenged each one to donate $300 to the shelter. If every agency met the challenge, Riley said, a total of $17,400 would be given to the organization.

In addition to money, Gould said, Pope Memorial Humane Society is always in need of paper towels and trash bags, as well as people willing to volunteer their time.
