We are open! Thank you to all who came out Saturday to celebrate the grand opening of the new facility. Well over 300 community members stopped by to check out our new home, see the animals in their new, roomier living spaces (and adopt a few, too) and to extend their best wishes.

Executive Director Tracy Sala, PMHS board member and Building Chairperson Warner Vaughan and shelter friend and benefactor Lyman Pope Jr., and his dog, Max, were joined by the PMHS board of directors, staff and volunteers, Building and Capital Campaign Committee members, John Davee of Maine Coast Construction, Mike Steitzer of MSA Architects, state Sen. Dave Miramant, Chris Rector, and Amy Rollins of the PenBay Chamber of Commerce were there to welcome the crowd and share in this milestone event for Pope Memorial Humane Society and the Midcoast.

On behalf of U.S. Sen. Angus King, Rector presented a Certificate of Senatorial Sentiment offering congratulations on the new facility. The community was thanked for its generous support, as were all the people who participated in making this much-needed facility a reality. The ceremonial ribbon, complete with a paw-print pattern, was cut to officially open the new facility. We are so grateful for the support of our community. We have been able to create a welcoming environment where families can come and find a new family member and where we can expand our life-saving programs. The shelter is now open Monday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Izzy is just one of dozens of cats currently at the shelter waiting for a home. He is a super-sweet, affectionate 1-and-a-half-year-old cat. He loves to give head bumps and knead your lap. If you are looking for a quiet, loving companion to keep you company, stop in and meet Izzy.

There is still time to register for the fourth annual T.O.P. Dog Open golf tournament to benefit Pope Memorial Humane Society. The fun-filled event, brought to you by Time Out Pub and Garden Island Laundromat & Tanning, will be held Sunday, Aug. 28, from 1 to 5 p.m. It's a four-person scramble (all skills welcome), with a shotgun start at 1 p.m, including "Closest to Pin" and "Longest Drive" contests with $100 prizes for each.

Preregister and the entry fee is just $100 per person; day of registration is $125. Entry fee includes round of golf, golf cart, tailgate party, prizes and giveaways. Sign up today at the Time Out Pub or Rockland Golf Club.
