Tickets are on sale and going fast for Owls Head Transportation Museum’s third annual evening fundraising gala, the Barnstormers Ball, Saturday, Aug. 27. This special evening invites attendees to don their finest 1920s-inspired eveningwear and enjoy a night of festivities at OHTM.

Last year, more than 200 people enjoyed live music, locally-inspired food and specialty libations set amid the museum’s world-class collection. This year, exciting additions will include a Charlie Chaplin impersonator, Fox on the Run food truck, a select live auction and more. The winner of the museum’s 2016 raffle vehicle — a 1966 MGB Roadster — will be drawn.

The theme of the 2016 Barnstormers Ball is Speakeasy Elegance. The museum will be transformed into a party venue inspired by the famous and daring barnstorming pilots who defined an era of aviation. These brazen pilots flew from village to village, chasing the seasons in their WWI surplus aircraft. It has often been said that these aviators relied on “baling wire, chewing gum and guts” to keep their planes aloft.

Known for their impromptu performances, the barnstormers were so named as they notoriously appropriated farmland for their makeshift airstrips, offering the farmer a ride in exchange. Word traveled fast when the barnstormers were in town, and their promotional tactics included such feats as “buzzing” the main streets of small town America to draw an audience upon arrival.

Enticing items will be sold to the highest bidder during a short live auction. They include travel packages with destinations from Monhegan Island and Freeport’s renowned Haraseekett Inn to an all-inclusive stay in Aruba at Divi & Tamarijn Aruba Beach Resorts. Also on the block will be a pair of CedarWorks’ Cedarondak chairs and a matching outdoor table; a spa package from Rockland’s Skin Klinic; and more. All proceeds from the auction benefit the Museum.

In the spirit of these historic aviators, the museum invites one and all to attend a celebration of history, fun and a little bit of good old-fashioned showmanship. In addition to the Charlie Chaplin impersonator, who will be posing for photos with guests, the event welcomes back Tony Boffa Presents The Carmine Terraciano Band and dancers from Swing & Sway Dancing. Fox on the Run’s chef/owner Lauren Jellison will join Swan’s Way, ensuring plenty of delicious culinary offerings for guests to enjoy. Sponsors of this fabulous event include Gritty McDuffs, Allen Insurance and Financial, Cianbro, Linda Bean’s Maine Lobster, A. Watson Design, Maritime Energy, Channel 8 WMTW and Nationwide Auto Transport.

Doors will open 6 p.m. Tickets for the gala are $100 per person, and a limited number will be sold; reserved tables are available in advance. All proceeds benefit Museum education programs.
