Sen. Dave Miramant of Camden was recognized by the Maine American Legion as a Legislator of the Year at the group’s 98th annual state convention in early June. The award was given to legislators for their work to improve access and awareness for veterans services.

“Being able to take action representing our veterans is one of the great pleasures of being a state senator,” remarked Miramant. “I will keep this award on my desk as a reminder to keep doing all I can for them.”

Legislation passed in the last session includes bills to provide additional staffing at the Bureau of Veterans’ Services, in order to assist Maine veterans in their transition back to civilian life after service has ended and connect them with the benefits they have earned; to direct the bureau to develop strategies to end veteran homelessness; to establish a regional pilot program to expand transportation options for essential programs and services; and to help veterans transition from military to student life through new tuition waivers at state colleges and universities.
