The Cushing Historical Society will hold an auction Thursday, Sept. 8, from 5 to 7 p.m. This will precede the regular second Thursday monthly meeting. Proceeds from this event will help defray the cost of repair to the South Cushing Baptist Church.

The church, built in 1854, has many areas that need immediate attention. In order to maintain the beauty of this church, maintenance needs to be done on a regular basis. The repairs this time are pertinent to the stability and noticeable water damage.

The church, found in a bucolic setting on a hill among majestic spruce and wild roses, has become an integral part of the community at large and, of course, the Historical Society. Each year a service of worship is held on the third Sunday of August, as was the stipulation from the last members of the church when the society was presented with the building.

Summer concerts, weddings, poetry readings and even a movie or two have been held there. The church is on Salt Pond Road, which connects Route 97 to Pleasant Point Road.

This country auction will be held in the barn, directly behind the Historical Society Meeting House at 17 Hathorne Point Road. Donations of goods and services are needed, including furniture, art work, books, tools, other collectibles, volunteers' time and expertise for services and more.

Call Beverly at 593-8799 with donations, and a date to pick up the offering or a time for delivery to the barn will be scheduled. If leaving a message, leave name, phone number and address on the machine.
