Gardener Denise DeSpirito will lead a presentation called “Backyard Herbalism: Herbal First Aid for Gardeners” at Merryspring Nature Center on Tuesday, Aug. 9, at noon.

The heat of the summer is upon us, gardens are in full bloom with lots to weed and harvest. In this talk, DeSpirito will go over some common ailments one may experience while working in their garden and what plants can be used to help. She will talk about how to make easy medicinal oils to use topically for muscle and joint pain, as well as to help heal cuts and scrapes. Part of the lecture will also cover how to make simple tinctures from some common herbs that are helpful to have on hand in the home medicine cabinet.

DeSpirito is the current head gardener at Merryspring. Her third season in Midcoast, DeSpirito comes to Merryspring after spending two years managing 4 acres of medicinal herb production at Avena Botanicals in Rockport. She has also grown herbs and flowers around the northeast, including Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture in New York and Farmacy Herbs in Rhode Island.

This is an outdoor presentation. Guests should meet at the Hexagon and wear weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy shoes. The Backyard Herbalism series will continue every six weeks throughout the summer. Copies of the recommended books “Herbal Recipes for Vibrant Health” by Rosemary Gladstar and “The Organic Medicinal Herb Farmer” by Jeff & Melanie Carpenter will be for sale after the presentation, along with a selection of gardening tools and plants.

This lecture is part of the Summer Talk series at Merryspring, sponsored by The First National Bank. Admission to Tuesday talks is $5, with free admission for members of Merryspring.
