The Strand Theatre, 345 Main St., will host “From Tragedy to Transcendence: Bach, Casals & The Six Suites for Cello Solo,” a multi-media presentation by guitar virtuoso Steven Hancoff, Sunday, Aug. 7, at 2 p.m. It is based on Hancoff’s four-volume iBook “Bach, Casals & the Six Suites for ‘Cello Solo,” created while he transcribed and recorded the Cello Suites for his acoustic guitar.

This rich exploration of the Cello Suites, Bach’s universe and his influence through the centuries blends music, videos and hundreds of still images into a vivid and compelling tapestry of history and stories.

Hancoff is an award-winning acoustic guitarist who specializes in Americana music — the history of the development of American music from Stephen Foster to Duke Ellington — performing folk music, blues, ragtime and jazz. He toured the world for about 15 years as an official Artistic Ambassador of the United States State Department, representing the U.S. in 50 countries. He has released two LPs and five CDs including his new three-CD set of his groundbreaking transcriptions of Bach's Six Suites for Cello Solo for acoustic guitar.
