River Arts on Route 1 invites the public to the opening reception for its newest exhibition, “The Maine Scene,” Friday, July 29, from 5 to 7 p.m. Also opening will be "Betwixt and Between," a solo show by Abbie Read, in the West Gallery.

In “the Maine Scene,” juried by Bruce Brown, artists from all over Maine portray the state through sculpture, photography, collage, painting, ceramics and fine craft —representational and abstract. The exhibition will continue through Sept. 1. Midcoast artists whose work is in the show include Melissa Bonning and Ann Cronin of Belfast; Molly Brosnan, Jean Byrd, Claudia Noyes Griffiths and Amy Lowry of Camden; Linda Simmons-Arnold of Cushing; Beth London of Liberty; Petrea Noyes of Lincolnville; Leslie Woods of Montville; Kris Johnson and Tom Kostes of Rockland; Diana Dion of Rockport; Sandi Cirillo of Searsport; Roberta Baumann of South Thomaston; Lucinda Talbot of St. George; Dianne Horton of Swanville; Geoff Bladon and Victoria Pittman of Tenants Harbor; Blaikie Hines of Thomaston; Jannetta Jennings, Heidi Locke and Kathleen Hardy Thornton of Union; Marie Bickford of West Rockport; Sherry Dec, Robert Macdonald, Brooke Pacy, Joyce Steel and Diane Walsh of Waldoboro; Brian Krebs of Warren; and Tania Amazeen-Jones, Joan Freiman and Karen Jelenfy of Washington.

Read of Appleton is a mixed media artist whose work tends to flow between two-dimensional work generally in the form of collage and three-dimensional work incorporating found objects; the latter often includes old, discarded books as raw material. "Betwixt and Between" includes both two- and three-dimensional work. The small collages were completed in series; and the three-dimensional work takes the form of wall hangings in which strips of book covers, with their intrinsic appeal due to the text, texture and color, have been stitched back together with linen thread to reference the tradition of crazy quiltmaking. The exhibit will run from Thursday, July 28, until Aug. 12.

River Arts is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information, call 563-1507 or email info@riverartsme.org.
