A special screening of the sci-fi classic “Star Trek: The Motion Picture” (1979, USA) is set for Tuesday, Aug. 2, at 7 p.m. at the Strand Theatre, 345 Main St.

The feature marked the return of James T. Kirk and crew to the mainstream. In the story, an alien spacecraft of enormous power is spotted approaching Earth. Admiral Kirk resumes command of the Starship Enterprise in order to intercept, examine and hopefully stop the intruder. Directed by Robert Wise, the film stars original “Star Trek” cast members William Shatner (Captain Kirk), Leonard Nimoy (Spock), DeForest Kelley (Dr. McCoy), James Doohan (Scotty), George Takei (Sulu), Michelle Nichols (Uhuru), Majel Barrett (Dr. Chapel), and Walter Koenig (Chekov); and introduced Persis Khambatta (Ilia) and Stephen Collins (Decker).
