The Maine Lobster Festival’s board of directors contributed financial support to three local organizations at its June 28 meeting.

Midcoast Sports Hall of Fame

The Maine Lobster Festival presented Midcoast Sports Hall of Fame $500, which the Hall of Fame plans to use to purchase display cabinets and other visual aids for its collection.

Established in late 2005, Midcoast Sports Hall of Fame raises funds, builds, maintains and supports efforts made to honor and remember the outstanding athletes, coaches, administrators, officials, reporters, broadcasters, trainers, designers and other associated positions that have made contributions to sports in the Midcoast Maine area.

At present, the Hall of Fame represents the areas served by Camden Hills Regional High School, Oceanside High School, Medomak Valley High School, Lincoln Academy, and Vinalhaven, North Haven and Islesboro high schools, plus all the former schools that once existed that now have consolidated into those schools.

The organization's new space at the Dow Discount Building has allowed it to adequately display each class of inductees plus the other memorabilia accumulated by the Hall. Their donation from the Maine Lobster Festival will help adequately present the collection of items they have acquired, plus sustain the operation of the Hall of Fame for years to come.

MCH Meals on Wheels

The Maine Lobster Festival board awarded MCH Meals on Wheels a $750 grant. MCH Inc. is the Knox County Meals on Wheels provider and has run the program for over 45 years.

In 2015 MCH Meals on Wheels served 30,684 home-cooked, nutritious meals every Monday through Friday throughout Knox County.  A team of 75 dedicated volunteers delivered meals to 208 homebound older adults and people with disabilities who are unable to get out to do grocery shopping or are unable to prepare their own meals.

MCH’s mission is to empower individuals, primarily older adults and people with disabilities, to maintain independent, active lives by providing them access to housing, Meals on Wheels and support services.

Thomaston Inter-Church Food Pantry

The Thomaston Inter-Church Food Pantry serves approximately 75 to 80 families each month throughout Knox County. The food pantry takes place in Watts Hall on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 to 11 a.m. Community members may stop by once per month to obtain needed food items.

Last year, Thomaston Inter-Church Food Pantry served 856 households and a total of 2,538 people.

The organization plans to use its Lobster Festival donation to buy food for Knox County residents in need. Roberta Carmichael attended the board meeting to accept the donation of $1,500 on behalf of the food pantry.
