The Spruce Head Community Hall & Historical Association will hold a potluck supper in the Spruce Head Community Hall, Village Road, Monday, July 11, at 6 p.m. Built in 1923, the hall is a local landmark that is undergoing major improvements, thanks to an ambitious fundraising effort.

Those attending should bring a casserole, salad, or dessert, plus a place setting. Bread and beverages will be provided.

After the supper, retired Chief Warrant Officer Paul Dilger, former captain of the Coast Guard Buoy Tender Abbie Burgess, will present an illustrated talk about local lighthouses.

The Abbie Burgess was named after the legendary teenager who kept the whale-oil light burning in Matinicus Rock Lighthouse for 21 days after a violent storm in 1856. Later, she and her husband were appointed keepers of Whitehead Island Light. She is buried in South Thomaston.

The program is free and will begin at approximately 6:45 p.m. Donations are welcome.
