The Union Area Chamber of Commerce hosts its annual pie social on the Common Friday, July 15, at 6 p.m. The scent of freshly grilled hamburgers, veggie burgers and hot dogs will be filling the air, but save room for the pies — all homemade, mouth-watering and in a wide assortment, including banana cream and peanut butter, as well as classics like blueberry and apple, to name just a few.

The chamber will also be giving away one girl’s and one boy’s bicycle in a free drawing. Children should obtain their raffle ticket when they arrive to be entered in the drawing. Winners must be present in order to receive their prize.

Among Friends will play popular standards of the ’20s through the ’40s, as well as contemporary country, folk and popular music. The group’s musicians include: Peter Proeller of Rockland on five-string banjo and vocals, Lora Stanchfield of Rockland on guitar and vocals, John Ianelli of Lincolnville on resonator guitar, and Ray Montana of Union on stand-up bass.

Proceeds from the sale of pies support the Union Area Chamber of Commerce Scholarship Fund, which is available for elementary, junior high or high school students who need financial assistance to pursue education or projects that relate to business, entrepreneurship, or leadership. Non-traditional students who live within the service area are also eligible to apply. Visit the chamber’s website for complete details.

Chamber members and anyone else interested in baking a pie to donate to the event are welcome to do so. Pie bakers are reminded to bring their pies by 5:30 p.m., or drop them off during the day of the event at the Common Market.
