Otty Merrill will lead a two-day introduction to encaustic painting workshop Saturday and Sunday, July 16 and 17, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at The Art Loft, 385 Main Street, Suite 9 (inside the lobby of the Thorndike Building).

Participants will learn to paint with encaustic wax, an ancient art medium that has been sweeping the country. In a sunny, well-ventilated and equipped studio, students will have an opportunity to learn through demonstrations and hands-on experience, leaving with three pieces.

Techniques such as fusing, texturing, embedding and using oil pigment will be demonstrated. Merrill's work has been shown in Midcoast and Portland galleries including the Center for Maine Contemporary Art and Maine College of Art.

Experienced artists also are invited; the workshop is limited to six students. Cost is $260 plus $30 materials fee. To register, visit artloftrockland.org. The Art Loft is a nonprofit community art center that offers low cost drop-in art classes, more in-depth workshops, Paint Nights, restorative art therapy and other special events.
