Seasonal resident Sam Brandon has released his first novel, which is set in Rockland. “Dead of Winter” is a mystery/suspense tale whose protagonist, Tom Cavalier, has moved back to his hometown of Rockland to open a psychology practice. The disgraced West Point graduate wants to put his troublesome Army days as a skip tracer for AWOL soldiers far behind him.

Cavalier’s struggling practice forces him to reconsider one more missing-person assignment. The stakes are high when a wealthy man offers him a large sum of money to determine if his daughter did not die in the World Trade Towers on 9/11, as the official record states. As Cavalier unravels the mystery, he finds himself framed for murder and on the run.

Brandon, who splits the year between Rockport and Oldsmar, Fla., said he has written screenplays for years, with a number being optioned. “Dead of Winter” will have a sequel, but the book he is currently writing, his second novel, is set in Silicon Valley.

“Writing is my full-time job now,” he said.

“Dead of Winter” is available online at Amazon.
