Alternative country/blues/folk rock band Cowboy Junkies will perform Saturday, July 9, at 7:30 p.m. at the Strand Theatre, 345 Main St.

The Canadian group was formed in Toronto in 1985 by Margo Timmins (vocalist), Michael Timmins (songwriter, guitarist), Peter Timmins (drummer) and Alan Anton (bassist). Their 1986 debut album was the blues-inspired “Whites Off Earth Now!!,” recorded using an ambisonic microphone in the family garage. The Junkies’ fame spread with their second album, 1987’s “The Trinity Session,” again using the ambisonic microphone; and their mix of blues, country, folk, rock and jazz earned them both critical attention and a cult following.

The group has continued to tour North America, Europe, Japan and Australia. In 2008, it released “Trinity Revisited” in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the original recording of “The Trinity Session.” The Cowboy Junkies have appeared on countless major television shows in North America; and their music has been featured in dozens of television programs and feature films.

General admission tickets are $45. To buy tickets or for more information on all upcoming live concerts, films, HD broadcasts and events at the Strand, visit; call 594-0070, ext. 3; or email
