Maria Ilse Birnkmmer is the July artist of the month at the Barb Jackson Gallery, 22 Central St. The gallery opens for the season Friday, July 1, also showing work by Liz Donald and Barb Jackson.

Texas-born Birnkmmer’s fondest memories of growing up in a large military family are those from the years spent in the Northeast and in Norway. Although her first artistic expression was through music, her need to create has led to many outlets through the years including playing the cello and piano, gardening, sewing, knitting, writing and painting. A published poet, Birnkmmer uses words to describe everyday themes — not too different from what she does as a painter. She always looks forward to visiting her sister, Sarah Halberg in Warren, and her acrylic paintings, specifically her “Maine Series” were inspired by Maine’s natural settings.

The Barb Jackson Gallery is located in Rockport village and will be open July 1 through Oct. 15. Summer hours are Wednesdays through Sundays from noon to 5 p.m.
