Art Space Gallery invites everyone to stop in during the July 1st Arts In Rockland First Friday art walk for wine, refreshments, to meet the artists and see the new front-room show from 5 to 8 p.m. This month’s reception will feature the work of Joan Wright, Janalee Welch, Melissa Post van der Burg and Michelle Walker.

Wright continues her exploration of the abstraction of reflections in water, as well capturing the many moods of her favorite island in the fog and out. Her exhibition will include both abstract and land/waterscapes around Vinalhaven, where she was been visiting for more than 35 years.

Welch will present soft pastel images of coastal Maine.  Since moving to the coast two years ago, she has become enamored with the blue water and the rocky shoreline.

Melissa Post van der Burg will be continuing her series of Maine-themed paintings.  Although she includes scenes from Vinalhaven and five islands, her primary focus is on Monhegan Island. The figurative painter has been painting island life for 20 years.

The natural shapes and structures of gourds provide the foundation for the vessels designed and crafted by Michelle Walker. The gourds are carved, dyed or left with their natural finish; incised with cultural symbols and lines suggestive of movement; and the openings are finished with leather lace, covered rush or pine needles.

Art Space Gallery is located at 342 Main St., across from the Strand Theatre.  The gallery features works by 19 artists who work in various media and genres. July hours are Mondays through Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sundays from 1 to 6 p.m. For more information, visit or check out the gallery’s Facebook page.
