Because of unforeseen setbacks in moving into the new building that will house Pope Memorial Humane Society, the grand opening planned for July 9 has been postponed. A new date will be announced for the grand opening in the future.

"We are eagerly anticipating the opportunity to move into the new shelter," Community Events Coordinator Anna Adams said in a press release. "The process will take some time: moving and cleaning kennels, office equipment, and animals across the way. We will then need time to get settled into our new space before we will be able to invite the community to celebrate with us."

Pope Memorial Humane Society of Knox County was founded in 1989 to provide care, protection, and loving homes for abandoned and homeless companion animals in the Midcoast area. Since 1991, the shelter has been located on Buttermilk Lane in Thomaston. The Humane Society of Knox County provides animal support services to the communities of: Rockland, Thomaston, Warren, Owls Head, St. George, Port Clyde, Martinsville, Tenants Harbor, South Thomaston, Spruce Head, Union, Appleton, Montville, Cushing, Matinicus, North Haven, Vinalhaven, Stockton Springs, Thorndike and Morrill.
