A station wagon was destroyed by fire March 9, but Lincolnville firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading to a nearby home.

Greg Black, who lives across the street from the 530 Beach Road residence, said he heard a popping sound and initially thought it was his neighbor working on his lobster boat. However, when he heard the noise again, he looked outside and saw the fire.

Black, who called 911, said he initially thought the house was on fire, but when he went over, he discovered it was a car in the driveway. Black helped the resident get out of the home safely because he was worried the fire would spread.

Fire Chief Ben Hazen said he is unsure how the fire started, but the Subaru Legacy was engulfed in flames when crews arrived. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire and had it under control within a few minutes.

The home is owned by Reggie Engstrom.
