River Arts on Route 1 invites the public to the opening reception for “Black, White and Tones of Grey” Friday, Jan. 15, from 5 to 7 p.m. The show includes 100 artworks by artists in a wide variety of media, including sculpture and fine crafts. The exhibition, which includes work by a number of Midcoast artists, will hang until Feb. 11.

Juror for the exhibition is Tina Ingraham, a painter with a broad history in a variety of teaching experiences, independently and within educational institutions. She currently is writing a text on teaching painting developed from her approach to teaching color theory directly on the palette and inspired by her study of master paintings relevant to her work.

Midcoast artists with work in the exhibition include M.K. Starrett of Appleton; Robert Adler, David Estey and Janalee Welch of Belfast; Larry Kinney of Camden; Beth London of Liberty; Leslie Woods of Montville; Kathi Peters of Morrill; Paul Karlsson and Jeanette Phillips of Rockland; Marie Bickford of Rockport; Roberta Baumann and Susan Baines of South Thomaston; Sandi Cirillo of Searsport; Dianne Horton of Swanville; Jan Dearborn of Thomaston; Jannetta Jennings of Union; Jan Gervais, Jean Kigel, Joyce Steel and Ted Mohlie of Waldoboro; and Joan Freiman and Tania Amazeen-Jones of Washington.

River Arts holds 10 themed, open, juried exhibitions per year, with some of Maine’s most prominent art community members as jurors. More than 800 different Maine artists have exhibited in these shows. The gallery program creates opportunity for artists to have their work selected, participate in the gallery process and sell their work. More than 7,000 people visited the gallery and participated in events and workshops last year.

River Arts is located at 241 Route 1, just north of N.C. Hunt, and is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information, call 563-1507; email info@riverartsme.org; or visit riverartsme.org.
