Every year, a motivated group of Medomak Valley High School students memorize two poems to recite in the school’s Dolloff Auditorium as part of the Poetry Foundation and National Endowment for the Arts’ Poetry Out Loud competition.
This year’s event took place Dec. 17. Students Antyna Gould, Elizabeth Flanagan, Haile Brown, Claire Lupien, Tyler Bowman, Rose Hickey, Somerset Ganz, Dylan Dickey and Ella Grant presented their pieces to the student body and were judged by Steve Cartwright, Michelle Gifford and Jann Minzy. Gould placed first; Lupien second; and Grant and Flanagan got honorable mentions.
Gould will go continue to the Northern Maine regional finals Feb. 29 at the Hampden Academy Performing Arts Center; snow date is March 1. Hampden Academy, Regional School Unit 22, is an in-kind sponsor of this event.
