Beloved local artist Audrey Bechler will hold an open house Friday and Saturday, Dec. 18 and 19, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The sign “Audrey’s Home Gallery” marks the driveway to her home/studio some two miles down Back Cove Road, after the right turn and just across from Flippers Market.

Bechler has been living on Back Cove Road for 31 years, and Christmas is her favorite time of year. She decorates the house and puts candles in the windows; puts up the tree, one she has grown in her yard; listens to music; and keeps the wood stove burning, warm and cozy inside.

"Most important is to be with friends and family, sharing the good food and atmosphere of Christmas. As I am planning to move to Eugene, Ore., to be closer to my son, this most likely will be my last Christmas in Maine,” she said. “Hopefully there will be snow.”

Bechler’s little cape home will be decorated with fir branches and Christmas memorabilia. All the walls are covered with paintings — hers and other artists whose work she has collected.

“My door will be open to friends who would like to share the Christmas spirit with me,” she said, adding that space is limited, so it may be necessary to park on the road and walk up the long driveway “with a flashlight, if it's after dark.”

In downtown Waldoboro, a show of Bechler’s work titled “From my house to your house" is on view at Tidemark Gallery through Dec. 19. For more information about either, call 832-6806 or email
