'Tis the season to give thanks and we have a great deal to be thankful for.

Thank you to all the volunteers and friends of the shelter who attended our annual Volunteer and Community Appreciation dinner. Taking care of an ever-increasing number of animals each year takes a community, and we are grateful for the wonderful group of volunteers who logged more than 10,000 hours. We couldn't do what we do without the help of our generous corps of volunteers.

Receiving special recognition for their outstanding volunteer service to the shelter this year: Paulette Stewart, Diane Mazzeo and the Whisker Walk Committee of Shawna Elwell, Leah Veldman, Pat Hembrough, Barbara Nickerson, Alicia Costa, Kim Grinnell and Richard Procopio. The Outstanding Community Service Award was awarded to Daryl and Laurie Waters of O & C Redemption in recognition of their contributions to the shelter with our ongoing can and bottle drive. If you are interested in volunteering at the shelter, we'd love to have you. Stop by and speak with a staff member.

Join us Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for the 36th annual Festival of Lights Craft Show at the Elks Lodge in Rockland hosted by PMHSKC. It's one of the biggest holiday arts and crafts events in the Midcoast. There will be many fabulous opportunities to obtain truly unique, handmade holiday gifts – and help the shelter in the process. Admission is $2 and children under 12 are free.

Our pet pick of the week is Chaos, a 2-year-old "pit" mix . This handsome, people-oriented dog is looking for a loving home. He is such a happy dog — just look at that smile — and he loves to play. Although Chaos gets along with some dogs, preferring females, he would prefer to be the only pet in the house. If you're looking for an active dog who loves to play and will be a doting companion, come meet Chaos. We have dozens and dozens of wonderful pets hoping to have a home for the holidays.

One of our wonderful supporters, Alan Post, donated a brand-new 700c Huffy Premier Men’s Cruiser Bike for us to raffle and raise money to help the animals. Check it out on our website hskcme.org. Tickets are $3 each, or four for $10. Stop by the shelter and get yours today (also available at the craft show). The drawing will be Dec. 4 (just in time for the holidays).

Visit us at 17 Buttermilk Lane off Route 1 in Thomaston. We are open daily from 11 a.m to 5 p.m, closed on Sundays.

Wish list. Canned dog and cat food, paper towels and more paper towels, sidewalk salt (in preparation for winter), laundry detergent, large black garbage bags, peanut butter, 6-inch paper plates. Thanks for your support.
