The Coastal Navigators Special Olympics team hosts its fifth annual fundraiser: A spaghetti supper and silent auction and live auction at the Camden Congregational Church, 55 Elm St., Dec. 11 from 5 to 8:30 p.m. The cost is $7 for adults, $5 for students.

Auction items include 100 gallons of heating oil from PG Willey, holiday wreaths, local gift certificates, Sea Dogs tickets, a quilt, Christmas centerpieces, gift certificates to local businesses, Michael Good earrings, a gift certificate to the Samoset Resort and more.

The Coastal Navigators team is a group of 25-36 adults with intellectual disabilities. This team participates in several Special Olympics events in Maine each year. This past year the team has competed in Orono for the track and field Summer Olympics, in motor activities at Hampden Academy, in the Special Olympics State Swim meet at Bates College, in the cross-country skiing and snowshoeing events at Sugarloaf for the Winter Olympics, went to USM for the basketball tournament and competed in the Tennis Skills State Championship at the Mid-Coast Recreation center in Rockport.

During the year the team practices for each of these sporting events in order to prepare for the competitions. The team gives out on average 10 to 14 scholarships or partial scholarships each year to athletes who would not be able to participate otherwise. Coaches also are trained for each of these events every three years.
