The owner of Northeast Transport Inc. on Route 1 said Sunday he was glad no one was hurt when a large truck caught fire in a garage at his business.
"I am grateful to the fire department for responding quickly and professionally," said owner Jeff Payson of Rockport.
Waldoboro Fire Chief Paul Smeltzer said the cause of the fire is under investigation, but firefighters know it started in a large truck that had to be towed outside the garage. The fire did not spread to the building, but caused significant heat and smoke damage, according to the fire chief.
No one was working in the building at the time of the fire.
A heat detector set off an alarm in the building, alerting the fire department. Firefighters from Waldoboro, Warren, Nobleboro, Friendship and Union responded. Bremen firefighters took over watching Waldoboro's station during the fire as part of the towns' mutual aid agreement.
The fire was reported before noon Feb. 22.
Smeltzer said the State Fire Marshal's Office will investigate, though the fire is not considered suspicious.
