The 126th Legislature, and the people of the State of Maine, honored the late Gail K. Whittier at the Union Board of Selectmen's meeting Sept. 16.

Rep. Jeffrey Evangelos, I-Friendship, presented the certificate to Whittier's daughter Cheryl Dawson and family after reading the proclamation.

"We join with the Town of Union in recognizing Mrs. Whittier's contributions to the community," states the proclamation.

Whittier, who died in December 2013, was well-known throughout the area. She drove a school bus for 45 years and later became head of the transportation department for Maine School Administrative District 40.

In addition to working full-time, Whittier ran a dairy farm with her husband, the proclamation said.

Union dedicated its Annual Town Report to the lifelong resident earlier in the year.
