The Oceanside boys and girls high school soccer squads squared off with Lincoln Academy of Newcastle on Tuesday, Sept. 9, with home fields defended well in both contests.

The Mariner boys and Eagle girls earned shutout wins, as the Mariners posted a 2-0 win in Thomaston and Eagle a 1-0 win in Newcastle.

Boys soccer

Oceanside 2, Lincoln Academy 0

At Thomaston Sept. 9, the Mariners (1-0-1) nabbed their first win of the year, this time over the visiting Eagles.

Christian Straka and Andrew King creased the net for Oceanside, while Kaleb Robinson assisted on King's score.

Oceanside coach Josh Mahar said his squad got off to a slow start, but dominated the field of play after the game's first 10 minutes.

The Mariners held a 20-7 lead in shots.

Girls soccer

Lincoln Academy 1, Oceanside 0

At Newcastle Sept. 9, the Mariners (1-1) had plenty of chances, but it was the Eagles that finished theirs as Oceanside dropped its first match of the year.

Leslie Sandefur scored the lone goal of the game with 32:41 remaining in the second half after she cleaned up a cross in the box and booted it up into the net past Mariner keeper Kalyn Grover.

Grover made seven saves for the Mariners, while Miranda Achorn made 15 saves in net for the Eagles. Oceanside led 15-8 in shots, 4-1 in corner kicks and 7-6 in direct kicks.
