The following is a synopsis of the 2014 Oceanside High School golf team:

Coach/years coached current team: Keenan Flanagan, 11th year.

Last year's record/playoff information: Finished the regular season with a 7-5 record. The Mariners shot an 18-hole, four-golfer stroke total of 369 and did not qualify for the state Class A championship.

Roster: Seniors Zeke Hamlin and Zach Bernard; juniors Nick Mazurek and Griffin Lombardo; sophomores Ryan Lawrence, Nate Hersom, Hunter Dinsmore and Kayden Frederick; and freshman Michael Dougherty.

Known graduation loss: Reilly Flanagan.

Significant impact golfers: Mazurek, Lawrence, Lombardo and Hamlin.

Team strength: Power, accuracy off the tee.

Team goals: To win the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class A South Division title and to be among the top five teams overall in Class A.

Top league opponents: Messalonskee of Oakland and Cony of Augusta.

Outlook: The Mariners return key golfers from last year's team and hope to win their division to earn a shot at an automatic bid to the Class A state team championships in October.

The top three teams from all three divisions advance to the shootout, to be held Oct. 3 at the Rockland Golf Club.

While confident in his team's abilities, Flanagan said his golfers need work in a few areas, including course management and their short games, including on the green.

“From 150 yards and in they need to work on their game,” the coach said.

While Mazurek's talents as the reigning Courier Publications schoolboy athlete of the year are well-documented as he finished second in the state in the Class A individual championships last fall, Lawrence “has probably improved the most out of everybody this summer” and Flanagan “is expecting big things” out of Lombardo.
